Public Hearing on Fort Worth’s Gas Drilling Ordinance
Monday June 9 at 6:30 pm
City Council Chambers
1000 Throckmorton
You are invited to attend a public hearing on Fort Worth’s Gas Drilling Ordinance at 6:30 p.m., Monday, June 9 in City Council Chambers located at 1000 Throckmorton.
This is a golden opportunity for you to express your opinion about gas drilling in Fort Worth, as well as voice your concerns about eminent domain and pipelines, noise from drilling sites in neighborhoods, salt water injections wells inside city limits and drill sites along the 67 miles of Trinity Trails.
Early this year, the Fort Worth City Council appointed an 18-member Ad Hoc Gas Drilling Task force to review the city’s gas-drilling ordinance. Members were selected based on various criteria—nine were appointed by the city council, one from each district, and the mayor, with four stemming from energy companies and the other five representing development, real estate, and land-use entities.
This task force is commissioned with revising the current gas drilling ordinance to adequately regulate gas drilling within our urban corridor. Pipelines are not covered in the current city Gas Drilling Ordinance. Possible changes to the ordinance include noise restrictions, public notice, protected use definitions, pipelines, high-impact wells, urban wells, setbacks, environmental issues, roads, and saltwater disposal wells.
Participation in these public hearings is critical: information is power, and once the final gas drilling ordinance is approved, it will be too late to make changes.

Geophysical and Seismic Surveys
You may already be aware that energy companies are circulating the neighborhood seeking the rights to conduct a seismic survey on or under your property. We recommend not granting a permit to conduct seismic surveys until your property is leased. It’s like showing all of your cards in a poker game. If the seismic is bad, and they know it before they lease you, you will probably not be leased. In addition, some seismic authorization forms include an option for the operator to acquire your lease, which in effect conveys your drilling and mineral rights. Signing such a form is not in your best interest.
BOTTOM LINE: Unless you are confident about what you are signing, please do not sign anything from anyone regarding your minerals or mineral lease until you receive word from the neighborhood association that we have an agreement we are recommending. We will let you know whether to expect door-to-door solicitations from energy companies. In the meantime, we are in the process of updating our website to keep the neighborhood more informed on the status of gas lease negotiations. STAY TUNED! Updates will be made when there is news to report. Thank you for your continued patience. Please remember, we have only one chance to get this right.
