Seismic Testing
Seismic testing in our neighborhood has once again resurfaced. AHNA does not endorse Seismic Testing.
Jeff Seay from Gateway Permit Services spoke to the AHNA executive committee on December 22 about doing another round of seismic testing exclusively for use by Chesapeake as they “fill in the blanks” on theirseismic map, thus allowing them to maximize production when drilling for natural gas. When we asked Chesapeake’s Public Affairs
Coordinator Keith Strawser if there were any known drill sites that could reach Arlington Heights, he said there were none at this time.
According to Gateway’s Jeff Seay, agents will be knocking on the doors of approximately 300 residents who have not yet signed a gas lease to obtain their permission to conduct seismic testing. Agents will be respectful of people’s privacy and willingness to sign the form, additionally agents will not be in our neighborhood in the early morning or late evening. Three agents from Gateway have been assigned to Arlington
Heights, and each has approximately one hundred permits to obtain. They will also be working in neighborhoods adjacent to Arlington Heights.
The reason Gateway is returning is that Arlington Heights was on the edge of the XTO’s Edwards project and the quality of data gathered from that seismic testing project was weak; additionally, Chesapeake is seeking to get higher quality data by surveying a larger area. Also geophysicists design projects differently and are more comfortable with their own models and the interpretation of that data. No compensation will be offered for permission to view these minerals. Payment from the last project was for surface access. However all work and equipment for this project will be conducted within public right of way, therefore they are not offering any compensation.
Providing permission to conduct seismic testing is entirely optional for homeowners and you are free to just say no – remember giving permission for Chesapeake to look at what lies beneath before we get a lease negotiated could give Chesapeake an advantage. Further, by providing residents with this information, AHNA does not endorse seismic testing—again, you are welcome to simply say no.
Seismic testing boxes will start appearing in Arlington Heights along the street right-of-ways within 6-8 months and testing will last approximately 30 to 45 days. Gateway’s Jeff Seay assured the neighborhood association that Gateway would work with us and our residents as they moved forward with seismic testing agreements. AHNA will provide residents with updates as they become available. Updates could come quickly, so check your email.
