BILLY W. SILLS CENTER FOR ARCHIVES/FWISD PRESENTS JULIET GEORGE
On the prairie west of Fort Worth, British-born Humphrey Barker Chamberlin commissioned a model mansion, grand hotel, trolley line, lake, and waterworks in the early 1890s. Thus, with great fanfare, he opened Chamberlin Arlington Heights as an opulent suburb reminiscent of his Capitol Hill enclave in Denver. The Silver Panic of 1893 brought an end to Chamberlin’s empire, but Arlington Heights’ history lives and thrives on the pages of the recently published book Fort Worth’s Arlington Heights, as well as in the bungalows and on the streets of the present-day Arlington Heights.
Juliet George, a native and longtime resident of Arlington Heights, surveyed school, university and museum archives, family albums, private collections, and online resources in an effort to collect photographs and information for inclusion in the book. Her research is ongoing.
In a presentation as part of the Billy W. Sills Lecture Series, Ms. George will share her discoveries about the diverse and interesting people who have made their homes – and history – in Arlington Heights.
