Calling All Closet Firemen
If you’ve always had a secret desire to be a firefighter, the upcoming Citizens Fire Academy may be just what you’ve been waiting for. Once a year the Fort Worth’s Fire Safety Education officer offers an 8 session course that provides an overview of all the aspects of the Fort Worth Fire Department.
It’s free, but you must be a resident of Fort Worth and be willing to have a background check.
The classes start on Thursday August 9 and every consecutive Thursday evening through September 27. Classes start at 6:00 p.m. and run for approximately three hours.
Here is the general outline of the classes:
- Thursday August 9th – Orientation; Red Helmets; Citizens Fire Academy; RACES (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service)
- Thursday August 16th – First Aid/CPR/AED; Fire Safety Education; ID badges
- Thursday August 23rd – Field trip to Fire Department Communication Center and Emergency Management Office
- Thursday August 30th – Hoses; Personal protective equipment; Self contained breathing apparatus (Station 31)
- Thursday September 6th – Dive team; Hazardous materials team; arson
- Thursday September 13th – EMS-99; Utility truck (air shop)
- Thursday September 20th – Technical rescue team rappelling; vehicle extrication; etc.
- Thursday September 27th – Graduation Ceremony
After graduation you have several options which include applying to become a member of the Citizens Fire Academy Alumni and assist the Fire Satefy Education Department throughout the year. You can also apply to become a member of the Red Helmet organization.
