NOVEMBER YARD OF THE MONTH

November 16, 2024 · Filed Under Events and News

The side yard pergola at 2021 Ashland Avenue makes a dramatic
visual statement while creating the perfect haven for bees and
butterflies to visit the salvia, wormwood, Texas sage, and
Little Gem Magnolias planted there.

The house at 2021 Ashland Avenue had been a rental property for several years before Georgeanne Dollar bought it and moved in at the end of 2022. She vowed to turn the front yard into a beautiful low maintenance perennial garden.

Enter professional master gardener Sarah Copp of Good Copp Creative who laid out a front yard design that extended the existing plant beds and included two new maple trees.  New to the mix are salvia, dwarf Hameln fountain grass, Carex feather falls grass that looks like a weeping version of variegated monkey grass, and lots of lamb’s ear.  In addition to the existing well-established nandina and Nellie R. Stevens holly, the new garden design features oakleaf hydrangea, prostrate rosemary, and Brakelights red yucca.  The front porch is home to Boston ferns in hanging pots, purple hearts, and potted gardenias, one of which is blooming even though it’s November.

The pergola on the south side of the house offers a seating area hidden behind a stand of Little Gem magnolias.   Pots of zinnias and geraniums add a splash of annual color.

For Georgeanne, her new yard turned out to be a dream come true.  She says it’s still a work in progress.

Georgeanne received a $25 gift certificate to Archie’s Gardenland and a year’s membership in Arlington Heights Neighborhood Association, courtesy of AHNA.

This is the last Yard of the Month award for 2024.  We’ll start up again in March or April 2025, depending on the weather.
