SOUTHWEST PARKWAY PROJECT – LOCAL STREET CLOSURES (HULEN BRIDGE, VICKERY BOULEVARD, ROSEDALE CONNECTIONS TO I-30)‏

March 30, 2010 · Filed Under Events and News · Comments Off on SOUTHWEST PARKWAY PROJECT – LOCAL STREET CLOSURES (HULEN BRIDGE, VICKERY BOULEVARD, ROSEDALE CONNECTIONS TO I-30)‏

SOUTHWEST PARKWAY PROJECT – below are some anticipated street closures & route changes taking place as part of the Southwest Parkway Project.

Union Pacific Railroad’s ‘Davidson Yard’ To close lanes on Hulen Street Bridge Starting Tuesday, April 6. Crews will close the north- and southbound left lanes of Hulen Street from Stonegate Boulevard to Hulen Place starting on Tuesday, April 6, 2010.  The closure is necessary so crews may remove parts of the concrete medians to allow temporary pavement to be placed.  Upon completion of this work, traffic on northbound Hulen Street will be diverted on to the west half of the Hulen Street Bridge.  This will create one lane of traffic in each direction on the west half of the Hulen Street Bridge across the Union Pacific Railroad Yard.  The closure of the lanes on the Hulen Street Bridge is expected to last until April 2011.

Reducing Eastbound Lanes On West Vickery Boulevard Starting Thursday, April 1
Crews will close one lane on eastbound West Vickery Boulevard immediately west of Hulen Street starting on Thursday, April 1, 2010.  The closure of this section of West Vickery Boulevard is necessary so crews may proceed with construction related to the Southwest Parkway at the Union Pacific Railroad Yard immediately to the south.   The lane closure on West Vickery Boulevard is expected to remain until April 2011.

Closing Rosedale Street Connector Exit and Entrance To I-30 Starting Thursday, April 1
Crews will close both the Rosedale Street connector entrance and exit to Interstate Highway 30 (I-30) starting on Thursday, April 1, 2010.  The closure of the Rosedale Street entrance and exit is necessary so that the existing bridges can be demolished and new ones can be constructed.  Due to this construction, drivers will no longer be able to make a direct connection to Forest Park Boulevard off East Vickery Boulevard.  All eastbound traffic on East Vickery Boulevard will be redirected onto eastbound I-30 under the Rosedale Street connector ramps.  In addition, the right lane on eastbound I-30 will be turned into an exit only lane for University Drive.  Crews will update all overhead signs to show this change.   The construction of the new bridges is expected to be completed by April 2011.

PLANT THE RIGHT TREE IN THE RIGHT PLACE

March 29, 2010 · Filed Under Events and News · Comments Off on PLANT THE RIGHT TREE IN THE RIGHT PLACE

As you head to the nursery this spring to choose landscape trees, it’s important to select the right tree for the right location.

Because different trees have different mature heights, plan carefully where you plant each tree. Planting the right tree in the right place will enhance your property value and may prevent costly trimming and damage to your home in the future.

Good landscaping also uses shrubs and low-growing trees (25 feet or less) that are compatible with overhead utility lines. Low-growing trees will not normally reach utility lines, and therefore will help prevent power interruptions to you and your neighbors.

The city generally does not encourage trees to be planted in utility easements and city rights of way.

The city staff works with local utility provider Oncor to educate residents on the need to plant the correct species of trees and shrubs if it is necessary to plant along roadways or beneath power lines.

Learn more:  A brochure is available online from Oncor to help you avoid planting trees that will interfere with overhead wires. The online brochure lists trees that are compatible around power lines and provides information on where and when to plant trees around your home.
