HANDS OFF CELL PHONES IN SCHOOL ZONES

August 23, 2010 · Filed Under Events and News · Comments Off on HANDS OFF CELL PHONES IN SCHOOL ZONES

As many schools open for a new year on Monday, remember to put down the cell phone when driving through school zones.

Using a cell phone while driving in a school zone is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $200. Cell phones can be used only with a hands-free device, in a stopped vehicle or to place a call to emergency authorities.

The National Safety Council has called for a total ban on cell phone use by drivers nationwide, based on estimates that the practice contributes to 6 percent of the 636,000 annual crashes. About half the crashes result in injuries, including 2,600 deaths, the NSC reported.

HARLEY AVENUE RE-ALIGNMENT

August 18, 2010 · Filed Under Events and News · Comments Off on HARLEY AVENUE RE-ALIGNMENT

Harley Avenue is a major arterial on the City’s current Master Thoroughfare Plan (MTP) and currently exists as an undivided 4 lane facility.  The 2004 Capital Improvement Program included $9,060,000 for the re-alignment of Harley Avenue between University Drive and Montgomery Street.  The construction is expected to start as early as March of 2012 with design to commence later this year pending the revision to roadway alignment.

The re-alignment will provide for better access to additional parking that is contemplated to serve the Will Rogers Memorial Center and to accommodate an appropriately sized site for a future arena. In addition, this alignment better mirrors the existing drainage, as the City will need to make significant drainage improvements along this proposed corridor.

To view the proposed plan, click Harley MTP Amendment. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Julia McCleeary prior to Sept. 22nd.

As you know, our City is facing a $73 million budget shortfall for 2011 and City Manager Dale Fisseler has asked for community input regarding both short- and long-term solutions.

News articles in the Business Press and an editorial in the Star-Telegram provide good background.  Also, the City website has a thorough presentation here.

The Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce has put together a survey for use by Arlington Heights NA as well as other neighborhoods for the purpose of gathering opinions on specific actions and solutions you would support for the 2011 budget.

http://www.fortworthchamber.com/survey/index.php?sid=36218  This survey will close on Aug. 13.

You are also encouraged to attend public hearings at City Council at City Hall Aug. 17 and Aug. 24 at 10 a.m. and Sept. 7 at 7 p.m.
